HAND ME DOWNS: Justin Bieber vs. Camilla Cabello

This week on Fresh Middays, we launched “Hand Me Downs” – a segment where I play a popular song that you know and love, and share which artist it was originally written for, and spin their demo.

To start strong, we’re unpacking Justin Bieber’s “Anyone.”

Released on January 1, 2021, “Anyone” has since been certified platinum in the US, and 2x platinum in Canada.

But some of that success could be attributed to former Fifth Harmony member Camilla Cabello, who was originally set to have the song on her album “Romance.” In fact, Camilla’s mother said that “Anyone” was her personal favourite song.

On February 7th, 2021, Camilla’s version came to light, and many fans believe that it was meant for her. The dreamy vocal slides, high notes and romantic energy surrounding the song suit her incredibly well, and hearing the full version left many fans upset that she and her team decided to scrap the track.
